Vision

The total spectrum of music encompasses so much more than arranging notes and chords on five lines. Music is a window into the soul: the soul of the object, subject, creator, or listener. A composer is merely a conduit for the inner message, he or she wields the machine that produces the outcome of the way that message is formulated, its content, its range and scope, its prosody, rhythm and so much more…

It would be a very easy move to elaborate on these subjective, seemingly carefully picked descriptions of music and its inner workings, like so many others do. One that we cannot engage in here since our brief time is so sparse. Instead, Roel hopes to let his music speak for itself as much as it can. Books are filled to the brim with poetic musings on how music has the capacity to touch anyone’s heart and mind.

Instead, the purpose of this very page is to acknowledge the general framework of his creative output so far. He certainly likes to create music for just music’s sake. It doesn’t have to mean anything but sound pretty. Or interesting. Or demonic. Or anything one wants it to be. The best thing about the language of music is: it’s free. Free from form or dogma, free from rules, certainly here, in this small corner of the internet.

Second, music can serve a purpose. It can be illuminating, contain ideas, thought processes, and concepts. It can whiz you into a mindset that evokes an intellectual awakening. Where else but in the heart and in the mind does music converge and interact so well? Many of my pieces contain such ideas, and music is used to translate the content. There is an intellectual thought behind it which cannot always be easily put into words, so why not into music?

And thirdly, music cooperates. With everything, but mainly every other art form you can imagine. Film is the obvious one: a good soundtrack complements and serves the film to its best extent, a good soundtrack does not stand out, it pulls you into different realms and aims to extend your viewing pleasure without you not even being aware of it. It is the perfect, selfless act of film music. When music cooperates with theatre (in the form of musical theatre or musical) it carries a narrative function that is shared with dialogue and staging, it is the perfect third piece of the pie, music for cooperation.
